KABUL (BNO NEWS) — Two U.S. service members were killed when their helicopter crashed in northern Iraq on Sunday, officials said.

The accident happened around 2.30 p.m. local time at a U.S. base in northern Iraq, according to U.S. Major Jeff Allen. He said two U.S. Army helicopter pilots, assigned to the Task Force Marne, were killed.

“I can confirm that the base is not Contingency Operating Base Speicher, but I cannot disclose the exact location or type of aircraft until after next of kin notification,” Allen said.

“The Task Force Marne command team mourns the loss of these two aviators and extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to their Families,” the U.S. Military said in a statement.

While the accident is still under investigation, there were no enemy forces present and no hostile fire was reported, according to the military.

The identities of the two soldiers are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
