Two moderate aftershocks shake Chile

nasa SANTIAGO, CHILE (BNO NEWS) — Two moderate aftershocks struck south-central Chile on Wednesday, briefly causing panic. There was no tsunami potential and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The first earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.9, happened at 2.44 p.m. local time (1744 UTC) about 25 miles northwest of Concepcion. The region is still recovering from a devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake that happened on early Saturday, killing at least 700 people in the quake and the resulting tsunami.

The second earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.6, struck about 70 miles west of the country’s capital, Santiago. The U.S. Geological Survey said the depth of the earthquake was about 12.7 miles. It was initially reported as a 5.8-magnitude earthquake.

No tsunami warnings were issued.
