Two light earthquakes rattle the Island of Hawaii moments apart

HONOLULU, HAWAII (BNO NEWS) — Two light earthquakes rattled the Island of Hawaii on early Friday, seismologists said, but causing no damage or casualties.

The first earthquake at 01.18 a.m. local time had a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale. It was centered about 17 miles (28 kilometers) east of Honaunau-Napoopoo, a census-designated place in the western part of the Island of Hawaii. It struck about 0.2 mile (0.3 kilometer) deep, making it a very shallow earthquake.

The earthquake was quickly followed by a smaller tremor at 01.20 a.m. local time, with a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale. That earthquake was centered about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of Pahala, or 19 miles (30 kilometers) east-northeast of Honaunau-Napoopoo.

There were no reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake. Hawaii is rarely hit by earthquakes.
