The first earthquake at 10.30 a.m. local time - with 4.9 on the Richter scale - was centered about 14 miles (23 kilometers) southwest of Seeley, in California’s Imperial County, or 17 miles (28 kilometers) west-southwest of Mexicali in Mexico’s Baja California. It struck about 3.4 miles (5.4 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the California Integrated Seismic Network.
The second earthquake, which had a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale, struck about 3 minutes later. That earthquake’s epicenter was centered less than a mile from the first earthquake.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but people throughout the region reported feeling the quakes.
