Two dead after elderly man crashes car into Nevada casino
February 4th, 2010 - 1:46 am ICT by BNO NewsLAUGHLIN, NEVADA (BNO NEWS) — A car slammed into the Edgewater Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring several others, officials said.
The accident happened around 9.30 a.m. local time when an elderly man drove his car at a high rate of speed into the main entrance of the building, said Officer Barbara Morgan, a spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. “Two people have been confirmed deceased,” she said. The fatalities are casino customers.
Morgan said the 75-year-old driver, who was not injured, possibly had a medical episode, and said no drugs or alcohol were involved. “Three people have been transported with unknown injuries,” she said, adding that two other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
A casino spokeswoman confirmed the incident, but had no other details. “We are assessing the situation,” she said.
The Edgewater Hotel and Casino is located in Laughlin, which is a census-designated place in Clark County, about 94 miles south of Las Vegas.
Authorities have asked drivers to avoid South Casino Drive in Laughlin, saying traffic will be delayed for hours.
