Aug 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) While excavating an area in Mexico for almost a year, archaeologists have discovered tunnels which it seems are leading to several ancient tombs, after a storm which occurred several years ago revealed the underground secrets.
A roof and many chambers were found which are believed to be the burial chambers of ancient rulers. It is hoped that the revelation of who is buried in the catacombs will reveal more about the Hispanic cultures are integrated.
It has long been claimed that something important lies at the base of the Temple of Quetzacatl. A major rainstorm in 2003 caused the ground in the area to begin to cave in, leaving scientists curious as to what lie beneath. The excitement builds as the tunnels which were found seem to be leading to the ancient tombs.
One archaeologist, Sergio Gomez stated, “I think the tunnel was the central element, the main element around which the rest of the ceremonial center was built. This was the most sacred place.”
In all likelihood, if this assumption is correct, then the people who were buried in this area were of great importance. This discovery could lead to vast amounts of yet undiscovered knowledge of how these ancient people lived.
According to Gomez, all of the signs so far point to it being the tomb of a ruler, especially the vast amount of rich offerings which were thrown into the tomb at the time it was closed off, including about 50,00 items made of jade, stone, shell, and pottery. There were ceramic beakers found there that have never been seen before.
