Chile earthquake LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — A massive earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday triggered a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for other states, authorities said.

As of 7.40 a.m. EST (1241GMT), a tsunami warning was in effect for Hawaii. “A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned. “Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property.” Other states, such as California, were placed under a tsunami advisory - which is less significant than a tsunami warning or watch.

A tsunami advisory has been issued for the coastal areas of California from the California-Mexico border to the Oregon-California border, and coastal areas of Alaska from Kodiak to Attu. There is no tsunami threat to Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the Oregon-California border to Kodiak, Alaska.

“A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is imminent or expected,” the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement. “Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.”
