Sep 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to reports from The National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Matthew has strengthened in the Caribbean, in the southwest part of the area.

Forecasts which were coming from the Miami Center stated that late on Thursday Matthew had maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and was moving west at 17 miles per hour. The storm was located 275 miles east of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua at that time.

The thirteenth named storm of the season is now gunning toward Central America and was 80 miles east/southeast of Cabo Gracious A Dios which is near the Honduras/Nicaragua border. It is now moving 20 west at 20 miles an hour, and has maximum sustained winds of 50 miles an hour. A tropical storm warning is now in effect for all coastal areas on the Nicaragua, Honduras, and Belizean coastlines.

Anywhere from 6 to 10 inches of rain could be expected in the countries of Nicaragua and Honduras, which are already water logged. Flash floods and mud slides are also possible. Although it has the potential to dissipate, it is expected to remain over land for a long time, thus causing the floods.

If the storm does not dissipate over land, then it could pose a threat to South Florida with it’s progressing trajectory. Hurricane Specialist Max Mayfield stated, “If the long-range models are correct, this might be a system that we will have to watch closely here in South Florida.”
