MIAMI (BNO NEWS) — Tropical storm Gaston formed over the eastern Atlantic Ocean on late Wednesday afternoon, forecasters said, but there is no immediate threat to land.

Forecasters at the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said the tropical storm formed about 1,440 kilometers (895 miles) west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, or about 2,635 kilometers (1,635 miles) east of the Lesser Antilles.

Tropical Storm Gaston is moving toward the west near 24 kilometer (15 miles) per hour and is expected to move toward the west or west-northwest at a slower forward speed during the next two days. No land is currently threatened.

As of 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) on Wednesday, Gaston had maximum sustained winds near 65 kilometers (40 miles) per hour, with higher gusts. “Slow strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours,” said forecaster Blake.

Gaston is the 7th named storm of the Atlantic season, and the 4th tropical storm in the last 11 days.
