storm1 Gulf of Mexico, Jun 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The oil-soaked Gulf of Mexico is on the verge of being hit by tropical storm Alex. After the storm hit Belize, it seemed to have been weakened when it was crossing the Yucatan peninsula, but now its gaining momentum and could be as strong as a hurricane by Tuesday, when it reaches the Gulf according to meteorologists, in a statement issued on Sunday.

The US national hurricane centre confirmed that Alex was at a location in southeast Mexico called Campeche as at 5 pm EDT. The storm is now gearing towards the west-north west at a speed of 9 miles per hour. But it’s expected to move towards the northwest in a weaker motion for the next couple of days. Alex could be classified as a tropical storm by Monday and even stronger, hurricane by Tuesday.

Alex would most likely shower total rain of between 4 to 8 inches over Guatemala and the Yucatan peninsular by Monday afternoon.

As it is, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has become the worse environmental disaster in the history of United States. And now with the advent of the Topical storm Alex, more havoc is being expected in that area.
