June 29, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Gulf Coast Of Northern Mexico and Southern Texas are under high alert as Tropical Storm Alex is expected to become a hurricane on Tuesday. The authorities have already started preparing emergency shelter and distributing sandbags. The storm is also expected to disrupt clean up efforts of the recent oil spill as it might push the oil further inland, according to forecasters.
Oil workers in the Gulf Of Mexico are also being evacuated due to the in coming storm. There are several families who visit southern Texas at this time of the year. The area has seen a lot of cancellations of the hotel bookings due to the approaching storm. The storm is expected to become a category-3 hurricane but it is yet to be determined whether it will hit the Gulf oil spill area or not. Precautionary measures are however being taken. Some forecaster have also warned the state officials that some of the areas under the alert might also face flash floods of up to one foot as heavy rains are expected to follow or accompany the storm.
Barry Goldsmith of National Weather Service said that rains are expected to continue from Monday to Thursday. The intensity of the rains will however depend on how the storm develops in the days to come. Alex has earlier created havoc in central America and the Yucatan Peninsula causing heavy rains that forced several vacationers to move out of their hotels and others cancel their bookings. It has also caused a landslide that claimed two lives in Guatemala.
