MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) — A tropical depression formed off southeast Mexican coast on Wednesday, meteorologists said, prompting tropical storm warnings for parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero states.

The center of depression 2-E was located at 10:30 a.m. local time (11:30 a.m. EST) 160 kilometers (100 miles) south-southwest of Salina Cruz, a port in the Oaxaca state, said the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The depression has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (30 miles per hour) but some gradual strengthening is forecast during the next two days. It could become a tropical storm by Thursday.

Mexico issued a tropical storm warning from Salina Cruz westward to Lagunas de Chacahua and a tropical storm watch from west of Lagunas de Chacahua to Punta Maldonado in Guerrero state.

“The depression is stationary but a slow west-northwestward motion is expected later today,” forecasters said.

The center of tropical depression 2-E is expected to be very near the coast of Mexico within the warning area over the next 24 to 48 hours, producing heavy rains, life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
