Anchorage, Sep 21, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Monday afternoon an earthquake of moderate intensity shook a huge part of the state of Alaska. At around the 1:24 p.m., the tremors of the earthquake of magnitude 4.9 were felt at places including Anchorage, Palmer, Wasilla, Valdez and Homer. Earthquake monitors located the epicenter of the Monday earthquake at about 10 miles southwest of Anchorage. Although the intensity of the earthquake fall in the range of moderate, people close to the epicenter of the earthquake stated that they felt the intensity of the tremors. However, as of yet the Alaska Earthquake Information Center along with the authorities concerned have not received any injury or damage reports. The tremor is not expected to generate a tsunami.
Geologist Cindi Preller who works with the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center mentioned to media sources that many people who were close to the epicenter of the earthquake called up at the center to share their experience. He mentioned that one particular caller who had survived the disastrous 1964 earthquake seemed pretty rattled. “It kind of shook back some of those memories” Cindi Preller held. Another woman from Anchorage named Lisa Withers said to media sources that she was managing her gift shop when the sudden tremors rattled the glasswares and dishes in the store.
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center mentioned that the strongest shaking was felt in Anchorage. State seismologist Roger Hansen, who is also the director of the Center mentioned that many residents reported that objects fell off shelves and appliances shifted due to the tremors. However, as of yet no major damages due to the earthquake has been reported. Cindi Preller maintained that although initial reports mention the earthquake to be of magnitude 4.9, it could most probably turn out to be of greater magnitude.
