September 21, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): A new documentary, ‘Waiting for Superman’ depicting the state of US public schools as well as the need to save them is about to be released this week. The film zeros on to some of the challenges faced by the students including those of Francisco, A first grader from Bronx and Anthony who is a fifth grade student from Washington D.C. The chronicles also include the problems faced by Emily who is an eighth grader from the Silicon Valley.

A book given with the documentary contains several thought provoking essays from the great minds around the country. The Gates, Bill & Melinda as well as Michelle Rhee, the chief of D.C. schools have put down their thoughts on the topic. Essays from the leader of the Children’s Zone in Harlem, Geoffrey Canada also gets to feature prominently alongside the others.

Checking out the trailer of ‘Waiting for Superman’ is enough to understand the enormity of the issue, the nation faces today. The statistics provide the numbers and it takes almost a superhuman effort to confront the fact that the students of USA are lagging far behind their compatriots in other countries today. It is evident that the students of today are less literate than before. The statistics also reveal the alarming rate of dropouts and low performance by the present day students across the nation.

These facts are traced simply through a compelling storyline which highlights the problems and makes us come face to face with it. The trailer had been enough to move some of the most hardened cynics to tears. While the story is an age old one right from the days of Jonathan Kozol as evident from his work, ‘Death at an Early Age’ published in 1967, it continues to this day. There is hope for the modern day Americans of course as you get to see thousands of bright and intelligent young citizens take up the challenge via ‘Teach for America’ as well as other similar organizations.

The film will be shown at select theaters in Philadelphia region 24th September onwards.
