Eiffel Tower September 15, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Thousands of people visit the world famous landmark, Eiffel Tower every day while visiting Paris. The visitors, however, got a shock of their lives last night at around 8 P.M. as they had to evacuate the heritage building after the police received an anonymous tip off about a bomb. The threat was particularly alarming since it came within minutes of the burqua ban being approved by the senate.

Almost 2000 tourists were led away to safety as the French police got busy combing the entire building thoroughly. The police then cordoned off the area and brought in the sniffer dogs in order to find the explosive. There was wide spread panic among the people present at the location. One of the tourists said that they had been about to get into the elevator when they heard that something was wrong and were told to leave the premises. None of the tourists were aware of the actual reason during that time and were just requested to ‘move back’ added the source.

Another tourist hub the Saint-Michel subway near the famed Notre Dame Cathedral had also been evacuated after a bomb scare quite similar to this one. The station had to bear the brunt of a terrorist attack in 1995 when eight passengers were killed and dozens sustained injuries.

The French police, in the meantime, have reported that it had been a false alarm with no party claiming the responsibility until now.

The Eiffel tower is a renowned tourist site and enjoys more than 6.6 million visitors from all over the world every year.
