Howdy there!

International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers, of Albany, Oregon, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.

The idea for this unique day was born when during a sports match, one of them got injured and yelled out ‘aaarrr’ in the pirate’s lingo. It started off as a joke, but gained prominence after a practical joke that both of them played on the humor columnist Dave Berry in 2002. They sent a letter about their invented holiday to him, just as a joke. But Dave Berry took the joke to the next level and promoted the holiday in his column. It gained national and international prominence after that.

Baur and Summers smelled a business opportunity for their joke and they started merchandise based on the Pirate Day. Their merchandise which includes books and T-shirts sold like hot cakes and more and more people were hooked on to the idea and converted to liking the Pirate culture and started celebrating the International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Even, the popular social networking site Facebook has an option to convert the text on the page into Pirate English. Nowadays, so many places like the Field Museum will be hosting a special day with all the Pirate plethora like Treasure hunt, screening of Pirate Movies, craft-work for children etc. Even Google has a special Search Engine on this theme at http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=xx-pirate This itself speaks about the popularity of the International Talk Like a Pirate Day worldwide.
