Tomorrow is Coast Guard Day
August 3rd, 2011 - 7:56 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington, Aug 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 4rd of August every year has been set aside to celebrate the work of coast guards. The day has been declared the Coast Guard Day and it is celebrated in several countries in the world.
The observation of the day was first done in the United States and over the years other countries have emulated the example. On the day, several things are done to create awareness of the problems that face coast guards throughout the world. The coast guards serve very vital part in rescuing people in times of disasters. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, about 33,500 people were rescued by coast guards in New Orleans. Incredibly 24,000 of the people who were rescued were in positions considered very dangerous.
On the 4th of August, coast guards in the various countries where the day is observed are honored for their courage and patriotism. Some countries observe the day on at different dates. For instance, in Pakistan, the day is observed on the 8th September b every year.
Millions of lives are saved each year by coast guards around the world. Some guards in the course of their duty lose their lives.
