Stockholm, Oct 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 2011 Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to Sweden’s Tomas Tranströmer. This is the first time that the honor has been given to a poet since 1996 when Wislawa Szymborska took it. By the feat, Tranströmer has become the 104th person to win the laureate.

Tranströmer’s works have been translated into more than 50 different languages the world over making him one of the few living poets whose work have been translated into that much languages. He is regarded as the most famous poet in Sweden and his works were praised by the laureate judges who awarded him the prize.

The Swedish Academy came up with the decision and the secretary Peter Englund admitted that the decision could spark controversy. Englund however defended the decision saying this is the first time in almost 40 years that a Swede has been named as the recipient of the award. In 1974, Eyvind Johnson and Harry Martinson – both Swedes - were named as joint winners of the literature award.

Englund said that, “It’s not that we spread them around on Swedes each and every year. We have been quite thoughtful about this - we have not been rash in choosing a Swede.”
