New York, June 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Today is Shavuot and Jews all over the world are observing it as such. As it’s the practice every year, the Ten Commandments will be read at various locations.

Shavuot is a Jewish custom and it marks when God gave the Torah (The Laws) to Prophet Moses on Mount Sinai. Scholars say the event took place about 3,320 years ago. The holiday is significant to Jews and it is celebrated over a period of two days. Three religions- Christianity, Judaism and Islam- all believe that God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai. The event is significant because it marks a period where God showed mankind how to walk with Him.

Children are very integral part of the Shavuot celebration. According to Jewish beliefs, God only handed over the Torah to the Israelites when they gave their children as the guarantors to Him.

It is a custom during the celebration of the Shavuot for Jews to hold a vigil for a night. The Jews hold the celebration of Shavuot dear to their hearts because they believe their very existence is dependent on the Torah.

Several other activities will be held to mark the celebration of the event.
