Green Bay, Dec 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 12th of December each year is reserved as the Poinsettia Day in the United Kingdom. The day is in recognition of the role that botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett played in bringing the flower to Europe and eventually the United States.

Poinsett who was only a former minister in the country was the first to bring the plant to the United Kingdom from Southern Mexico. The plant was later sent to the United States by Paul Ecke Jr. where he is celebrated for it. US House of Representatives in 2002 officially recognized the Poinsettia Day to honor Ecke Jr. for the role that he played in bringing the plant to the country.

The Poinsettia is one of the most famous flowers in the world. The industry is also very huge with a market value in the United States going over the quarter of a billion dollar mark in the United States.

On the Poinsettia Day, lovers will be sending the flowers to each other. With the Christmas coming shortly after the observation of the day, the flower will no doubt play an important role in how the day will be observed.

Decorative poinsettias are available in floral shops throughout the world.
