Los Angeles, Feb 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Americans will mark the birthday of George Washington on Wednesday (22nd of February). The day is one of the most important on the calendar of the United States.

The Presidents’ Day, which was observed last Monday, was in fact inspired by the birthday of America’s first president. 1968’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act observed the birthdays of Washington and President Abraham Lincoln as the basis for the observance of the Presidents’ Day.

Today (the 22nd February 2012) is the 280th birthday of Washington. The day was set aside as a holiday in Washington in 1879. Later on, the day was accepted as a federal holiday in the United States.

Yakima herald is not impressed that the Presidents’ Day does not fall on the birthday of any of the two presidents it seeks to honor. The website argues that, “The official observance falls on the third Monday in February — between the Feb. 12 birthday of Abraham Lincoln and Washington’s birthday. Thus, congressional action brings about a Presidents Day that will never fall on either of the presidents’ actual birthdays. Perhaps this is Congress’ idea of a compromise.”

Several activities have been lined up by different states to mark the important day.
