New York, June 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Today June 14th is Flag Day in the US, celebrating the date in 1777 when the Second Continental Congress adopted the “Stars and Stripes” flag. In addition, the US army will also celebrate the “army birthday” today.

Here are some facts about the stars and stripes flag:
— President William Taft issued an executive order in 1912 dictating the proportions for the flag and placement of the stars. Prior to the order, the flag’s features were left up to the flagmaker. This resulted in misshaped star arrangements, as well as unequal proportions.

— Betsy Ross, who has been frequently credited with having sewn the US’s first flag, apprenticed as an upholsterer. She learnt to make and repair curtains, bedcovers, umbrellas, and others.

— The US Congress officially adopted the current US flag as the nation’s flag on June 14, 1777. The following day, Ross married Joseph Ashburn, her second husband.

— The American national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” is based on the 15-star, 15-stripe flag sewn by Mary Pickersgillin Baltimore.

— Since it was first adopted, the flag has been modified 26 times. Today’s 50-star flag was adopted in 1960. It has been longest used US flag.
