Today 10th December is Human Rights Day
December 10th, 2009 - 10:13 pm ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )Washington DC, Dec 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Today 10th December is Human Rights Day. This particular date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is the first global enunciation of human rights. This formal establishment of Human Rights Day happened at the 317th Plentary Meeting of the General Assembly on 4 December 1950.
This declaration was drafted by representatives from numerous countries and cultures, as it embodies a global humanitarian consensus within its being.
This day is being celebrated across the world. In Hague, demonstrators marched from the Peace Palace, which is home to a number of international judicial institutions, to the illustrious parliament building. And a Walk of Rights was also held in numerous countries across the world.
However some critics are of the opinion that there is little to celebrate, as there is violence all around the world, which is detrimental for Human Rights. In Darfur, the Congo and in Africa, there have been mass killings all over and they are continuing too, with only minor and sporadic attention from the media or the United Nations.
According to the Human Rights Commissioner Louise Arbour, ‘Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime. Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.’
