Titanic officer’s kin reveals the ship’s sailing mistake
September 27th, 2010 - 11:23 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattSep 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) This revelation would sure shed a lot of light on why the mammoth ship Titanic struck the iceberg and sank. One Titanic officer’s kin has admitted that in all probability the ship was steered towards the iceberg, rather than away from it. And this was because there were conflicting steering instructions, which led to the totally avoidable mishap.
Titanic’s second officer was Charles Lightoller and her granddaughter – novelist Louise Patten has come out with her new book – ‘Good as Gold’. In this book, she says that the helmsman who was manning the steering wheel was well versed with the Tiller Orders system and when he was ordered to steer the ship away from the direction of the iceberg, then unknowingly he steered into the direction of the iceberg.
She also adds that the mistake was discovered while the ship was sinking away, but it was too late to do anything about it. And Louise also adds that her grandfather Charles was present at the final meeting of the four senior officers, when the mistake came to light, but all of them willingly choose to keep it under wraps because of the official inquiry.
“It was made clear to him by those at the top that, if the company were found to be negligent, it would be bankrupted and every job would be lost,” Patten says.
The mistake was really costly, as over 15,00 people perished in the tragedy.
