untitled23Oct 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On the morning of Sunday, the clocks are to be set an hour back. The day of the fall change for the year 2009 has arrived, and we will have to set our locks back by a single hour. This happens due to the Daylight saving Time. DST is also known in Britain as summer time. This phenomenon is practiced so that the day is extended in the afternoon (which has more daylight), and less daylight in the mornings. The European DST starts from last Sunday of March and continues till the last Sunday of October which falls today. The clocks are set forward by an hour when spring is to start, and with the autumn coming the clocks are again set one hour back.

Daylight saving Time was first started in a handful of countries like UK, Ireland and Germany. It began during the World War I. The modern DST’s proposal was given by George Vernon Hudson in 1985. He was an entomologist from New Zealand. The main motive was to save coal, a very important resource in that age. The DST was stopped as soon as the World War got over, but in the early 1980s, the system began again, with many countries in Europe starting to do it again. However, since all the countries didn’t adopt this feature, communication and transports were affected. This led to the standardization of the DST in 1996 to make all the European countries consistent together. The move was decided by The European Union.

Other countries using the DST includes Turkey, but since the country is huge therefore the time lapse in actually 1hour and an extra 16 minutes. 16 minutes is a huge difference, and the proposal for change has already been made.
