SANTIAGO, CHILE (BNO NEWS) — A series of strong aftershocks rocked Chile within a timespan of just one hour on Thursday, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The first earthquake, which had a 6.9 magnitude, was centered about 95 miles southwest of Santiago, the country’s capital, at a depth of 21 miles. It happened at 11.39 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Agency, which first reported the earthquake as having a 7.3 magnitude.
As residents were evacuating coastlines out of fear for a tsunami, a second aftershock with a 6.7-magnitude struck about 80 miles southwest of Santiago, at a depth of 27 miles. That earthquake struck at 11.55 a.m. local time, some 16 minutes after the 7.3-magnitude aftershock.
A third aftershock struck moments later, at 12.06 p.m. local time. The earthquake had a 6.0-magnitude and was centered about 90 miles southwest of Santiago, at a depth of 19 miles.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no destructive widespread tsunami threat from the 7.3-magnitude earthquake, but warned the quake could generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. “Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action,” the agency said in a bulletin.
The aftershocks happened nearly two weeks after a massive 8.8-magnitude quake struck the same area, one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history.
According to local media reports, Chilean officials reported strong shaking but no damage in the aftermath. President Sebastian Pinera, who was sworn in shortly after the earthquakes, urged coastal resdients to move to higher ground. Media reports said Congress had been evacuated.
