February 4th, 2010 - 2:25 am ICT by BNO News ( 3 comments )LAUGHLIN, NEVADA (BNO NEWS) — A car slammed into the Edgewater Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada on Wednesday, killing three people and injuring several others, officials said.
The accident happened around 9.30 a.m. local time when an elderly man drove his car at a high rate of speed into the main entrance of the building, said Officer Barbara Morgan, a spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison confirmed three people had been confirmed deceased. “The car hit six slot machines and three people were sitting there who were killed,” Allison said. He said four to five others had been injured, two of which were treated at the scene.
Morgan said the 75-year-old driver, who was not injured in the accident, possibly had a medical episode, and said no drugs or alcohol were involved.
A casino spokeswoman confirmed the incident, but had no other details. “We are assessing the situation,” she said.
The Edgewater Hotel and Casino is located in Laughlin, which is a census-designated place in Clark County, about 94 miles south of Las Vegas.
Authorities have asked drivers to avoid South Casino Drive in Laughlin, saying traffic will be delayed for hours.
