Thieves Take $75M In Prescription Pills At Warehouse Heist
March 18th, 2010 - 11:16 pm ICT by Angela Kaye Mason ( Leave a comment )Mar 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The description sounds like something out of Hollywood. Thieves cut a hole in the roof of a warehouse, and then rappelled down inside the building and made off with millions…seventy five million to be exact. But it wasn’t diamonds, gold, or historic art that was taken, it was prescription drugs.
The authorities said that this was obviously well thought out and planned, as it took hours for this theft to be accomplished. They already had pallets and equipment that was needed for the job, and it seemed to be very well organized. When asked by a Fox news anchor if they had video of the theft, they spokesperson said that they could not comment on that as of yet, since this is a new investigation.
The pills, which were stolen from Eli Lilly and Co, are suspected to be on their way to the black market, maybe overseas. There were enough of the drugs stolen to fill a tractor trailer. “This is like the Brink’s pill heist,” said Erik Gordon, a University of Michigan business professor who studies the health care industry. “This one will enter the folklore.” He also said the thieves could easily net $20 to $25 million.
Apparently the thieves climbed a brick wall of the warehouse, which is located in an industrial park in Enfield, Conn. The job was done during a rainstorm early Sunday morning, before dawn. After cutting through the roof and repelling to the floor, they turned off the alarm system, and began to load pallets of drugs into the truck they had at the loading dock.
“Just by the way it occurred, it appears that there were several individuals involved and that it was a very well planned-out and orchestrated operation,” Enfield Police Chief Carl Sferrazza said. “It’s not your run-of-the-mill home burglary, that’s for sure.”
An Eli Lilly spokesman, Edward Sagebiel said that the stolen drugs were worth about 75 million, and included anti-depressants Prozac, Cymbalta, and anti psychotic Zyprexa. There were no narcotics or painkillers. Experts described it as one of the biggest pharmaceutical heists in history.
