Thieves steal diamonds at Swiss Fair
March 31st, 2011 - 9:10 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattBasel, Mar 31 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Thieves have successfully stolen four diamonds valued at millions of dollars during a jewel fair in Switzerland.
Police are looking for the robbers and they explained that the robbers managed to steal the precious stones after they distracted an employee at the fair. The fair was taking place in the northwestern part of the Swiss city of Basel.
Local newspapers report that the robbery was carried out in a sophisticated manner. A spokesman for the investigators in Switzerland explained what led to the stealing of the diamonds.
Markus Melzl had several interviews with the media outlets throughout the world. He told the French newspaper Agence France-Presse that, “Three diverted the attention of the diamond trader’s employees, while two others opened the showcase.” He later told the Associated Press that, “It was carried out in a very professional manner.”
The incident took place during the annual Baselworld Trade Fair on Wednesday. When the organizers of the fair realized what had happened, they quickly sealed the exits of the fair for about half an hour but they failed to identify the thieves. Police are studying the surveillance video at the fair.
