March 24, 2010, (Pen Men at Work): The Schindler’s list- A Monumental artifact of great historic value has been listed for sale at $2.2 million. The list documents the names of Polish Jews who were being kept from the Nazis during World War II and was drafted by business owner Oskar Schindler and his Jewish accountant and right hand Itzhak Stern made 7 copies of his life-saving list of which the whereabouts of two of them are unknown.
The Israeli Holocaust Museum has two, another is in a public archive in Koblenz, Germany, another is in the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C., and the final list belongs to the Stern family descendants. It’s the only list remaining in private hands, the rest are in museums.Oskar Schindler, the Czech businessman did the noble act of saving more than a 1000 Jews from the Nazi Death camps. He employed them in his privately owned ammunition and enamelware businesses in Germany to save them from persecution by the Nazis and that too at great personal risk. The list had been held for over 55 years by the family of Schindler’s accountant, Itzhak Stern.
The Stern family recently sold it to the current, unidentified owner. New York memorabilia dealer Gary Zimet, said,” It’s printed on onion-skin paper. It’s remarkable given the age and the paper. It’s in excellent shape.”Oskar Schindler was a compassionate man who risked his own life to save innocent people from the gas chambers. His quote remains inspirational to this day- “If you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car, wouldn’t you help him.”
Schindler’s heroic efforts were adapted on screen in the Academy Award winning Movie “Schindler’s List,” that was directed by Steven Spielberg.
