This year’s July 4 Independence Day celebrations in America has taken a very tragic and bloody turn after a truck carrying fireworks exploded. The incident has left two pyrotechnics workers dead, while grievously injuring three other co-workers. According to reports on CNN, the incident is said to have taken place in Ocracoke Island in North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Saturday, July 4.
The Hyde County spokeswoman Jamie Tunnell said that the five involved in the fatal accident worked for a company that was setting up the annual Independence Day fireworks display on the docks of the Ocracoke Island; they were the crew members belonging to the company. The fireworks that exploded, were the ones meant to be used for the fireworks display.
The deadly explosion had taken place at the Ocracoke Island docks a shortly after 9 a.m, while the workers were setting up for Saturday night’s show. The effect of the explosion almost rocked the island; it completely destroyed an 18 wheel truck, set several small bushes around on fire and sent debris flying in to the water, which was nearby to the scene of the explosion.
According to reports, one of the victims died at the scene, while the other one was taken to the N.C Jaycee Burn Center at University of north Carolina, where he passed away due to the critical injuries (95%) that he had sustained in the blast. The third victim is reported to be in stable condition still, at the burn center. The other two were flown to the Pitt Memorial Hospital; there has been no updates on their conditions till now, as officials have declined to release any reports.
The names of the victims involved in the accident, who work for the Melrose South Pyrotechnics in Catawba, have still not been released.
