The Gunpowder Plot, Remember the 5th of November
November 6th, 2010 - 2:25 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonNov 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In what is called the “most famous conspiracy in Great Britain”, the Catholics plotted to have King James I and the entire British Government killed in 1605 by using gunpowder to blow up Parliament. Guy Fawkes was caught in the conspiracy, and made the scapegoat, so to speak, for the entire plot. He was sentenced to be killed by public execution near Parliament, giving him martyrdom.
The plot was foiled when Sir Thomas Knyvet found Fawkes hiding out in the cellar, and ordered a search of the entire area. Over twenty barrels of gunpowder was found, which would have definitely destroyed the place. Fawkes and his co-conspirators were to be hanged, but only after having their guts burned while they were alive. To avoid this fate, Fawkes threw himself off the scaffolding head first, broke his neck, and died immediately on January 31 1606.
In remembrance of this day, November 5 has been set as “Guy Fawkes Day” and is celebrated all throughout Great Britain with fireworks and bonfires. Remember Remember the 5th of November/Gunpowder treason and plot. We see no reason/Why Gunpowder treason/Should ever be forgot.” is quoted everywhere…to remember that fateful day when Guy Fawkes was caught trying to destroy the allegedly corrupt and fascist government.
