Los Angeles, Oct 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The debate on whether the Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie are gay has been heightened by a recent Twitter message from Bert.

The following Twitter message from Bert “Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr T’s? The only difference is that mine is a little more “mo”, and a little less “hawk”” has flared up the debate about the sexual orientation of the characters.

In particular is the use of the word “mo” which is used to represent gay in some circles.

Not that the characters that have stayed on the television for more than 30 years are humans or something. They are puppets but what they represent is very important because the show is primarily used to teach children.

Pervious debate of the sexual orientation of the puppets stemmed from the fact that the pair always shared a bed but that the show’s producers disbanded argument about that issue in 1993.

The Sesame Workshop said, “Odd Couple-esque twosome intended to show that true friendship can transcend differences between individuals. They are puppets, not humans. Like all the Muppets created for Sesame Street, they were designed to help educate pre-schoolers. Bert and Ernie are characters who help demonstrate to children that despite their differences, they can be good friends.”
