Texting while Driving Law to be expanded

Jefferson City, Dec 2 (THAINDIAN NEWS) It could soon be unlawful for drivers to text while driving in Missouri. And it would also apply to all motorists. Two representatives filed proposals Tuesday that would prohibit texting while driving in Missouri. The law is yet to be passed.

Rep. Linda Fischer, D-Bonne Terre, said that the current law needs revision. “The act of texting is not age-relevant as far as the potential to be involved in or create an accident,” she said.

The two new bills actually vary only slightly. One prohibits all texting while driving, while the other is looking to ban the act of texting only for motorists on paved roads.

Rep. J.C. Kuessner, D-Eminence, explained that the bill would want the motorists to pull over to text, since they can’t text while driving.

Meanwhile in the state of Colorado, it is now illegal for everyone to text and drive too at the same time. “That’s going to be one of the hard parts because part of the law says we can’t actually seize cell phones,” says Sergeant Lonnie Chavez with the GJPD. “It’s going to be one of those ones where it’s going to be an extended, I guess, keypad push.”

Chavez also says that ‘even if you’re stopped at a stoplight, you could still get a ticket for texting while driving. And if your cited, you’ll face a $50 fee for the first offense, $100 for the second one’.
