Texas school rejects lesbian couple’s daughter
August 21st, 2010 - 9:00 pm ICT by BNO News ( 1 comment )BEDFORD, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) — A Texas school has denied a lesbian couple’s daughter because it does not agree with their relationship, according to local media on Saturday.
KDFW-TV reported that Jill and Trace Harrison were married in 2006 in Canada, where same-sex marriage was legalized in July 2005. Last month the couple filled out admission forms to enroll their 4-year-old daughter, Olivia, into St. Vincent’s Episcopal School.
“They have a great reputation and lots of wonderful things said about them online,” Jill told KDFW-TV about the school in Bedford, a city in northeast Tarrant County. “As far as academically their scores were fantastic.”
When they applied, the channel reported, Jill wrote her name next to the word “mother” on the forms. She crossed out “father” and wrote in “mother” next to Tracy’s name as well.
The child was accepted at first and school officials said they assumed Tracy was a man. But that changed when the couple attended parent’s night this week.
“Nothing negative at all toward us,” Tracy said. “Until we got the phone call.”
In a statement to KDFW-TV, the school said its decision was based on what it considered best for all students and “in conformity with scripture and our own church’s doctrinal standards.”
“We regret the disappointment the mother feels. It is clear, however, that enrolling the child in a traditional Christian school, such as St. Vincent’s School, would not foster her own personal values at home. And it might undermine the moral instruction of our clergy and teachers in the minds of our schools students and parents. Our prayers are with Olivia and her mother,” the school said.
The school said it would also deny admission to children of a heterosexual couple who live together outside of marriage, but the lesbian couple said they are not convinced that is true.
“I was taught that God loves everyone and it doesn’t really matter, it matters what you do and how you are, and not who you sleep with at night,” Tracy said.
The child has not been told why she will be going to another school.
