The US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has arrested four men over an alleged terror plot to attack a synagogue, a Jewish community centre and a military base in New York.
The US district attorney (DA) said the men are being held “on charges arising from a plot to detonate explosives near a synagogue in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York.”
Lev Dassin, acting attorney for the southern district of New York, said the four had also planned to use Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles “shoot military planes located at the New York Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport in Newburgh, New York.”
The FBI has tracked the four men, identified as James Cromitie, also known as Abdul Rahman; David Williams, also known as Daoud or simply DL; Onta Williams, also known as Hamza; and Laguerre Payen, also known as Amin and Almondo, for over a year.
As part of the sting operation an FBI informant provided the group with an inactive missile and inert explosives.
Charges against the four men include conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction in the US, and conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles.
The men are expected to appear in court in White Plains, New York, tomorrow, May 22.
