Temperatures in the UAE to reach up to 45°C (113°F) on Sunday
June 6th, 2010 - 3:44 pm ICT by BNO NewsABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (BNO NEWS) — Temperatures in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are expected to reach up to 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday, forecasters said.
The extreme temperatures come days after tropical cyclone Phet affected the region, killing at least 24 people in Oman before it moved to Pakistan. The cyclone did not directly affect the UAE but caused some rain and rough sea conditions on its eastern coast until Saturday.
Now the cyclone moved away, the temperatures are set to shatter records. Inlands, temperatures may reach 45°C (113°F) on Sunday with humidity as high as 90 percent. In coastal areas, temperatures may hit 40°C (104°F) with a humidity of up to 95 percent.
The extreme temperatures are even for the UAE unusual. “Fair, hot, and hazy weather,” a forecast from the National Center for Meteorology and Seismology read. “Partly cloudy weather at times during daytimes, and some low clouds over the eastern and mountainous areas by afternoon. Slight to moderate wind in general, freshening at times by afternoon causing blowing dust/sand over the internal and the open land areas.”
The hot weather is expected to last at least two more days, in which temperatures may even surpass the 45°C (113°F).
According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the highest temperature ever recorded was on September 13, 1922. Temperatures then reached 57.7°C (136°F) in El Azizia, Libya.
