Aug 18, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The collapse of its talks with Target Corp has prompted the nation’s leading same sex rights body to carry on its protests against the company for its donation made for supporting a homophobic Republican gubernatorial candidate. The officials involved with the human rights campaign said that the retailer practically turned down the proposals put forward by the group to make up for the earlier donation. The issue has come under media scanners since this is the first instance of a company’s donation getting mired in national protest in this election season. The corporate organizations can now use their funds for campaigning in elections owing to a Supreme Court order.
Target is on tenterhooks amidst the rising instances of protests that it is facing outside its stores and also on the web. Social networking forums seeking its boycott have surfaced in the web. It has adopted a wait and watch policy before taking a stand on the sensitive issue. The donation made for making ads backing conservative Republican gubernatorial candidate from Minnesota Tom Emmer who has opposed same sex marriages for a long time has made the gay support groups enraged.
The San Francisco officials have hinted at the blocking of two upcoming target stores and it is a city which has a huge number of same sex rights advocates. A number of gay support groups have asked the members to boycott Target. After the failure of its talks with Target the human rights group is now reportedly in talks with another giant retailer Best Buy. It is hoping the negotiations will work out this time.
