Tampa, Florida man stabs girlfriend during hostage situation
March 10th, 2010 - 3:33 pm ICT by BNO News ( 2 comments )TAMPA, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) — A Tampa, Florida man was arrested on Tuesday after stabbing his girlfriend he held hostage for over four hours, authorities said.
Police said the victim, Tameka LaShawn Washington, 27, recently moved out of the apartment that she hared with her boyfriend. He was identified as Walter James Scott, 44. Washington returned to the home on Tuesday to pick up some of her belongings but was grabbed and pulled inside by Scott when he answered the door. The victim’s sister, who was with her, called police at 2.18 p.m. local time.
When officers arrived on the scene they began speaking with the suspect through the partially opened front door that had been barricaded with a couch, said Laura McElroy, a spokeswoman for the Tampa Police Department. “When the suspect refused to release the victim, hostage negotiators and the Tactical Response Team was called to the sceme,” she said.
McElroy said hostage negotiators were able to develop a good rapport with the suspect by talking through the front door and on the phone. ” It appeared the suspect was about to surrender when he cut off communication with the negotiators,” McElroy said.
Officers with the Tactical Response Team then rammed the door and made entry at 6.27 p.m. local time, out of concern for the victim’s welfare. “The suspect stabbed the victim in the back,” McElroy said. “She ran out of the bathroom toward the officers.”
Tampa Fire Rescue treated the victim at the scene and transported her to Tampa General Hospital where she remains in a stable condition. Scott was not injured and taken into custody.
Charges are still pending.
