Taliban issues a new code of conduct

Afghanistan Violence Kabul, Aug 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Taliban in Afghanistan have issued a new code of conduct for its fighters ordering them that they should protect civilians who do not side with the NATO and Afghan forces. The code however ordered the Taliban fighters to kill anyone who sides with the Afghan and NATO forces.

The code, which was issued last week, is contained in a 69-page document that was obtained in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday. The Taliban have been most deadly in the recent times. “The Taliban must treat civilians according to Islamic norms and morality to win over the hearts and minds of the people,” according to the code.

The code told the fighters that they must treat the civilians according to Islamic norms. The code said that would ensure that the group wins over the minds and hearts of the people to be able to get their support in the fight to get back to power in Afghanistan. The Taliban was toppled just after the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States because government chose to harbor the dreaded terrorist Osama bin Laden.

The latest directive will seriously affect NATO’s efforts to get local opinion leaders to back the coalitions fight against the Taliban.

The United Nations estimates that the Taliban and its insurgents are responsible for the deaths of more than 70% of the civilians in the war.
