Taiwan turns military brothel into a museum

Taipei, Dec 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A military brothel that used to exist on the island of Kinmen in Taiwan has got a huge makeover. Its seedy past is now certainly buried in the past, as it is now a certified museum, which is now bound to be on the itinerary of the tourists.

The brothel has been rechristened as the ‘Special Tea House Museum’. “The purpose of the museum is to give visitors a rough idea about the background of the so-called ‘Military Paradises’ and what their function was,” according to Hsu Ying-fan.

The museum is all set to boast of pictures and even some sizzling posters from the era, when it used to be a brothel. During its days as a brothel, the military personnel had to stand in a queue and buy tickets before they could get ‘serviced’. And the museum is now going to display the tickets too. It ought to be mentioned that during the era of the Cold War, there used to be around 100,000 military personnel who used to be stationed in Kinmen. To take care of their bodily needs, the military had officially sanctioned 11 brothels.

After the demise of the Cold War, the brothels were shut down. The very last brothel closed its doors in 1990.
