Tacoma, WA Feb 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A teacher was shot and killed at Birney Elementary School at 1202 South 76TH Street in Tacoma Washington this morning at around 7:35 am. According to Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Tory Green, crews responded to the calls before classes started and found the 30 year old female teacher dead, outside of the school with gunshot wounds to her head and chest.

The spokesman said that no children had yet arrived at the school and therefore no children were hurt or injured. The school has closed for the day, and parents are urged to stay away from the scene. So far the name of the teacher has not been released, however it was told that she was a special education teacher.

The gunman fled after the shooting but the Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputies gave chase, tracked him down to 166th and Canyon Road. Shot were fired between the police and the gunman, and Tory Green said to reporters that the suspect was fatally injured. This has not been verified as of yet by the police. Reports from police spokesman Mark Fulghum are that the gunman and the teacher knew each other and this is suspected to be a domestic dispute. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.
