Swedish climber Fredrik Ericsson dies after a drastic fall on the K2 peak
August 7th, 2010 - 1:36 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattVienna, Aug 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) There are media reports that the renowned Swedish adventurer Fredrik Ericsson has been killed while he was trying to climb the K2 mountain.
Media reports said that Fredrik, who was with Austrian climber Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner fell for more than 1,000 meters and died instantly on impact.
The accident occurred during Kaltenbrunner’s failed attempt again to conquer the mountain. Kaltenbrunner is one of the best female climbers in the world. Till date, Kaltenbrunner has failed several times to conquer the mountain, which is located on the Chinese Pakistani border.
Kaltenbrunner has by far conquered a total of over 8,000 meters, a rare feat that is only enjoyed by two other women till date. She has managed to scale 14 of the world’s top mountains.
Kaltenbrunner and her group were making the descent when out of the blue, Ericsson fell and died. Eyewitnesses say Ericsson fell after avalanches happened at her left and right side making him lose his balance.
“It’s snowing, the avalanches go off - and the relatively high temperatures loosen the stones from the slopes…I feel my health is more important than the summit,” according to one of the climbers Christian Stangle.
It ought to be mentioned that the K2 mountains remains a very dangerous mountain to conquer. During Kaltenbrunner’s recent attempt, her group had to abandon the expedition again due to bad weather and avalanches.
