Washington, Oct 30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The two suspicious packages that were found in two U.S. bound flights in Dubai and United Kingdom contained the explosive substance PETN, United States authorities have confirmed. PETN or pentaerythritol trinitrate is a highly explosive substance that is often used by terrorists to carry out attacks and in the recent past, it has turned out to be a hot favorite among terror organizations. United States President Barack Obama addressed the media about the matter in White House on Friday where he described the recent discovery of packages containing PETN as ‘”credible terrorist threat.’
While talking about the explosive material that were nabbed by authorities in Dubai in a flight which was on its way to United States from Yemen and another package that was found in United Kingdom, the United States president confirmed that the packages were addressed to a Jewish center located in the Chicago area. Although President Barack Obama validated that it was indeed an attempt to carry out a terrorist attack, he did not specifically mention that Al-Qaida might be behind the incident. However, U.S officials have said that the initial probe that has been carried out points out that Al-Qaida was responsible for attempting to send the packages with explosive substances to United States.
Despite the fact that Officials in the United States as well as in the other countries responded quickly and defused the packages, the incident has sparked an international terror alert. PETN was the same substance that was used in the failed Christmas Day bombing attempt that took place last year in a Detroit bound Northwest airliner.
