Suspect shot dead by police officer in Lakeland, FL
April 1st, 2010 - 2:31 am ICT by BNO NewsLAKELAND, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) — A suspect was shot dead by a police officer in Lakeland, Florida on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Lakeland Police Officers Phil Smith and Ted Sealey were dispatched to the residence of 1434 E. Gary Road, where a female victim reported to be stabbed.
The officers arrived, entered the residence, and announced their presence. As they continued to search the area, they found an adult male with a knife hiding in a closet. He confronted the officers in a hostile manner, and Officer Smith reacted defensively, shooting the man to protect himself and Officer Sealey from harm.
The female victim’s wounds are not life threatening, but the man deceased at the scene. His name is still unreleased.
Officers Smith and Sealey, who have worked at Lakeland Police Department since 1992 and 1998, respectively, will be placed on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation of this shooting by the State Attorney’s Office. This is standard procedure.
