gun June 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In many cities which have been plagued with violence, authorities felt that the answer may be to ban the handguns, and so they did, yet the violence continued and in some cases, worsened. After citizens challenged their city’s handgun bans, the Supreme Court made a historic ruling; that the banning of a citizen’s right to carry a handgun is unconstitutional.

When Chicago resident Otis McDonald looked around him, he saw that although the honest citizens were banned from having a gun, the criminals, who did not choose to obey the handgun ban, were still carrying guns and perpetrating crimes. He decided to challenge his city’s handgun ban, saying he needed to be allowed to protect himself.

“If I see innocent and law-abiding citizens on the streets with guns, I’ll be safe,” McDonald stated. “I’ll feel safe because they’re not going out there breaking the law.”

In a historic ruling which was passed down yesterday (Monday June 28, 2010) the United States Supreme Court stated that a complete ban on handguns was against the United States Constitution’s “right to bear arms” in the Second Amendment. The Court decided that individuals have the right to protect themselves. This decision was not only for Washington, DC, but “applies equally to the federal government and the states.”
