Chicago, June 29, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A Supreme Court ruling may put an end to the decade old handgun ban in Chicago but the city mayor has vowed that he will contest the verdict. The apex court has ruled that the residents of America have the right to own arms no matter where in the country they live. Richard M. Daley, the Chicago Mayor said that the officials are reframing the city ordinance according to the court verdict but also made it clear that He will make sure the residents stay protected from gun violence. Even in other US states and cities the officials expressed the view that the gun control laws will be left unaffected.
Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City is another ardent advocate of gun control also echoed his view. He also said that the safety of the residents can never be compromised. The ruling of the Supreme Court was given on Monday and it came as a big win for the supporters of gun right. However, they also think that the state governments may impede ownership of guns with new laws. The National Rifle Association’s executive vice president Wayne LaPierre, also said that he expects local governments to oppose the new verdict but vowed to fight back their efforts.
There are some states that do not ban the ownership of hand guns but have laws to keep it within a limit. Deval Patrick, the Massachusetts Governor is coming up with a law to put a limit on handgun buying. Richard M. Daley did not reveal his exact plans but he may call a special session to address this issue.
