Suicide bombings kill more than 30 at mosque in southeast Iran
December 16th, 2010 - 1:18 am ICT by BNO NewsTEHRAN (BNO NEWS) — More than 30 people were killed on Wednesday when two suicide bombers blew themselves up at a mosque in southeastern Iran, state-run media reported.
Press TV said the suicide bombers attacked the Imam Hussein mosque in Chabahar as Iranians were commemorating the death of Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson. The People’s Resistance Movement of Iran (PRMI), better known as Jundallah, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
Iranian media reported that at least 33 people had been killed in the twin blasts, while 83 others sustained injuries. Some were said to be in a critical condition.
“I strongly condemn the outrageous terrorist attack on a mosque in Chabahar, Iran,” said U.S. President Barack Obama. “The murder of innocent civilians in their place of worship during Ashura is a despicable offense, and those who carried it out must be held accountable. This is a disgraceful and cowardly act.”
Obama said the United States condemns all acts of terrorism, wherever they occur. “This and other similar acts of terrorism recognize no religious, political, or national boundaries,” he added.
The United Nations also condemned the terrorist attack in Iran, which sporadicly sees terrorist attacks on places such as mosques. “[UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon] is shocked and dismayed by this abhorrent terrorist act directed at mourners commemorating the Holy Day of Ashura,” his spokesman said.
