ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) – A suicide attack on Monday killed 26 people and injured over 40 more at a mosque in southwest Pakistan, local media reported.

The explosion took place in Wana, in the district of South Waziristan. The apparent target was cleric Noor Mohammed, a member of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, an organization linked with the Taliban.

The suicide bomber blew himself up as the cleric was greeting the members of the congregation after prayers. The mosque was severely damaged by the blast and people were buried by debris and rubble.

So far, officials have confirmed the death of 26 individuals and fear that many more could be discovered after finishing cleaning the area.

The cleric was confirmed to be among those killed. He was considered an influential figure who acted many times as a negotiation between the Taliban and the local government. He was publicly opposed to the presence of Uzbek militants.
