Strong earthquake strikes the South Pacific Ocean

KERMADEC ISLANDS (BNO NEWS) — A strong but fairly deep earthquake struck in the South Pacific Ocean on early Friday, south of the Kermadec Islands, seismologists said. No tsunami warnings were issued.

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake at 1.06 a.m. local time (1306 UTC Thursday) was centered about 473 kilometers (294 miles) south-southwest of Raoul Island, part of the Kermadec Islands. It struck about 156.1 kilometers (97 miles) deep, making it an intermediate depth earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Due to the depth and the location of the earthquake, no damage is expected. No tsunami warnings were issued.
